WALMER TOWN COUNCIL / Hawkshill Freedown Signage

The Hawkshill Freedown signs, commissioned by Walmer Town Council, highlight the ecological importance of this extraordinary site while educating visitors about its unique natural heritage. These signs were designed to raise awareness of natural chalk grassland—a critically rare habitat that covers only 4% of Britain’s landscape and just 0.2% in Kent. Recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Hawkshill Freedown serves as a vital sanctuary for rare birds, insects, and other wildlife, making it a treasure of local biodiversity.

As the designer, I managed every aspect of this project, from concept to completion. The signs feature original wildlife photography captured by me, adding an authentic and personal touch to the visuals. The design combines engaging imagery with clear, informative content, ensuring accessibility for a diverse audience.

By blending educational value with visually compelling design, the Hawkshill Freedown signs successfully communicate the site’s significance, fostering greater appreciation and understanding of its delicate ecosystem. This project demonstrates my ability to create impactful environmental communication tools that support conservation and community engagement.
